Bonjour,

Beaucoup d’entre vous ont écrit, commenté et contribué à notre projet ces derniers jours. Je tiens à vous remercier de votre soutien et de votre confiance.
Je me suis demandée ce qui pourrait vous intéresser afin de vous impliquer vraiment dans ce projet au dessein collaboratif… Et voilà, j’ai décidé que j’allais vous raconter l’histoire de ce beau projet à travers des anecdotes et le cheminement des idées. Ainsi, vous pourrez vivre avec nous l’ambiance, les hauts et bas, en bref, l’aventure humaine de projet. Le point de départ de ce projet, c’est l’admiration pour le savoir-faire et le respect de l’autre.
Je vais donc commencer par le débu

L’idée de ce projet a commencé à gigoter dans ma tête au retour d’un voyage en Israël à Jérusalem, c’était en 2011.
C’est lors d’une promenade dans la ville ancienne de Jérusalem que ce beau projet est né. Je déambule dans le marché de la ville ancienne, côté musulman. Une conversation avec un marchand de textile et de broderie, Mahmud s’engage. Mahmud tient à me montrer sa collection extraordinaire de robes palestiniennes. Je découvre un trésor ! Certaines robes ont été confectionnées à la main il y a 30/40 ans. Venant de différentes zones géographiques, elles racontent des histoires et incarnent des symboles différents. En découvrant cela, je suis saisie et très émue par la finesse de ce travail. Je me plonge alors dans l’étude de ces symboles, de cette technique unique et de leurs origines.
En rentrant à Paris, je poursuis mes recherches. Je suis portée par l’idée que ce savoir-faire oublié mérite de s’actualiser. Je cherche alors des brodeuses palestiniennes avec qui travailler et des pièces anciennes en Israël et en Palestine sur lesquelles travailler. Je voulais pourvoir les adapter et les inscrire dans des pièces nouvelles. Je choisis d’intégrer ces symboles sur de nouveaux supports par un assemblage subtil qui tienne compte du goût occidental et qui crée un ensemble du cohérent.
À l’aide de connaissances à Paris, je prends contact avec Nadima à Damas. Grâce à elle et un groupe de brodeuses, nous réussissons à fabriquer les premières pièces originales, adaptées.
Ce travail nous a demandé de relever de nombreux challenges : la situation politique sensible à Damas qui s’est beaucoup détériorée depuis, la distance et la difficulté économique, le manque de confiance, nos différences de langue, les différences de culture visuelle … Nous
avons dépassé toutes ces difficultés pour les transformer en richesse et permettre de réaliser ces pièces qui seront harmonisées plus tard avec la broderie Israélienne par une brodeuse à Paris.
Ces pièces représentent mon lieu de naissance, elles symbolisent le lieu de naissance de l’immigré.

NEW-HEADER La collecte sur KKBB
Embroidered Memories, is an outgoing adventure, a process of an artistic creation, artisanal production and exhibition in the heart of sustainable development!
What about?
It is an art project at work that speaks of collective memory and migration, of identity, of sharing, of cultural diversity. As an interdisciplinary project it uses tools from art, decorative art and design languages.
How?
A unique production It is based on up-cycling and a new process of collaborative production between an artist, designer and architect (Tal Waldman-Talva Design), a group of fabulous Parisian craftsmen and a photographer. That means it’s all about working differently, sharing: the creation, the memories, the knowledge and expertise. By that we join and practice bigger ideas of our time, such as circular economy, collaborative production, sustainability and up cycling.
Materials, The embroideries and recycled furniture are an allegory, our base and a moral choice, as we add our traces and create on an existing memory. Following a personal story, the project is engaged in a fluid process of finding embroideries from Palestine and Israel representing the place of birth, followed by finding furniture from France representing the adoptive land. Later recycled, reworked and created into new objects in a group in Paris.
Results?
Art Work, soon to be completed, include a series of hybrid objects interpreting different states of an immigrant (traveling, memories, economic difficulties; maintaining integrity while adapting; dissimilarities between the homeland and the adoptive land.). It also includes a series of photos widening the human dimension of the project helping to understand the process.
Exposition, The project will be exposed in a traveling exhibition. Two museums, ‘La Piscine’, an Art and Industry museum in Roubaix and the furniture Museum of Hazebrouck have pledged to host our exhibition. Other museums in France and abroad have expressed their interest for an exposition between 2014 and 2016.

A bit more background,

Why this project?

1. It contributes to circular economy, up-cycling, re-design and eco-conception
both by the project’s environmental aspect, but also by a cooperative process of production (responsible and local). The project joins and supports a policy promoting sustainable production and consumption. The project promotes the development of a final product, after recycling and / or re-designing. It supports the eco-conception by incorporating the environment during product design, with a vision of the entire life cycle of the object.

2. Beyond my autobiographical story, migration is a phenomenon that affects the collective memory and the entire world population. Immigration, diversity, respect for each other.
The project promotes a model of mutual respect in a culturally diverse society. This is reflected, first of all, by the themes of immigration, identity, memory, and harmonizing differences. Second, it is illustrated by the artwork of a family of hybrid objects resulting from a mixture of multicultural materials that question individualization and coexistence.

This project calls to different collective memories by the choice of recycled materials, and by the human and manual intervention on the traditions revealed. Traditional embroidery from the Middle East (Palestine and Israel), and French furniture mixes into objects, stories, memories, culture and craftsmanship. Intervention in these traditional pieces requires a delicate balance between conservation and innovation of these heritages.

These eclectic styles, symbols, cultures, origins and functions led to the search for a new visual language capable of translating and merging differences in an environment of cultural and technical hybridization. The function and meaning of the object are revisited. The object, with its multiplicity of identities transforms. Its visual and functional originality make it take a new autonomy and life.

3. This project proposes a new model of production and a synergy of art, design and craftsmanship with a significant artistic, cultural and economic impact.
Repeatedly in the history of art we find currents of thought that blur the distinction between the decorative arts, art and design. Today boundaries are again indistinct. We examine the boundaries between the fields, the role of the artist and the craftsman.
It allows an exchange between disciplines, as the technical study is done together. A platform and method of experimentation and innovation is established (5 technical innovations in 20 months of research).

4. Globalization and tradition
In the current context of globalization, it is essential to enhance and revive the traditional skills while respecting their geographical specificity. We would like to propose a model of production that respects the traditional working methods and the environment, hence the choice of materials and techniques based on recycling and craftsmanship.

5. These small hybrid creatures with their history, their material, through a process of a collaborative reflection… inhabit me for a long time. I could no longer ignore them.
“The immigrant”, travel and immigration;
“Tea break” stop and remember;
“The Worker”, economic difficulties;
“Interrogative Identity”, the difficulty of maintaining integrity while adapting;
“Between Two Lands”, Dissimilarities between the homeland and the adoptive land.

Why fund it?

The idea and the spirit of sharing are the initiative and soul of this project. This is also the reason why it seemed appropriate to use crowd funding as an aid to support finishing the production.

“Embroidered memories” is a research and production we are working on for 20 months. We have made several prototypes. So far I have purchased the materials and all participants have volunteered their time and conviction. Help us lead this project to its conclusion!
This collection will:

–  Pay craftsmen to complete the production and cover some of their expenses (not including the actual hours of thinking and working on the project): 2400 €

–  Cover a portion of the expense of material: 1100 €
Embroidery purchased in the Middle East;
Objects and furniture purchased in France (other than recycled or found elements)
New materials,(wood, metal, various details).

A total of € 3,500 to help us complete the research and production!

Embroidered memories

Embroidered memories is an ongoing project for the last 15 months. It is a research and production with a group of Parisian artisans.
It is an interdisciplinary and intercultural project from multiple heritages and artisanal traditions, but it is first of all an art project that speaks of the collective memory and migration, sharing and cultural and technical hybridization.
It is build around a new model of collaborative production between artists and craftmen based on recovery and recuperation.
The result of our work is a series of autobiographical hybrid objects that we will share through a traveling exhibit in several museums and events in 2013-2016.

Workshop “design and Recovery” is a creative and educational project initially intended for mixed populations of adults and children.
The project’s objectives are education on recycling and creation out of recycled objects in workshops directed and designed by Talva.
The organization is made by the association 4 à 4 dix huit, and as in 2012 the project has met a certain success it expanded to five events in 2013 and with two other partner associations.
On December 8th we celebrated ” Soup’Collect” with exhibits about compacting and recycling and a public recuperation of plastic bottles to be used in the following workshop.
This is only the start!

Talva-design-autoportrait-colorI was asked to join a jury for a design and architecture contest in Jovoto.

Jovoto is an international platform for art, design and architecture serving a global creative community as well as clients around the world and has a very unique approach.
It’s a very interesting experience for me, being on a jury ‘on line’ is an active role commenting about the creation in its processes as well as voting and watching the community which is rather intriguing.

Interview:

1. What makes architecture so interesting to you?

Architecture, design and art have a creative process that is extraordinary. It is this process that interests me; conceiving, creating, planning, designing, constructing a form, a space, a composition that reflects conceptual, functional, technical, social and aesthetic considerations. This process requires the creative synchronization of the concept, the spirit and intuition with the material, technological and pragmatic aspects. This intersection between heaven and earth, between mystery and evidence, intuition and analysis is stimulating.

2. Do you have a “philosophy” for design? If so, what is it?

Whether I work as an architect, designer or artist it is always important for me to stay simple without mannerisms, create with integrity and intuition yet by justifiable actions. This might not be an axiomatic rule but rather my way of doing things. I try to stay focused on the essential and functional with beauty as a consequence.
I’m trying to avoid a self obsessed object, surface or space. I’m searching rather for an object with a consideration to the space around it and its users, a space with a feeling to the objects in it. The life and space in every project are a consideration already during conception.
3. Exploring the space between fine arts, design and architecture is there something, an element or a rule, you always hold on to/go back to?

These are all disciplines that construct our environment. I find it artificial to separate them. Therefore, I try to find the place where architecture, design, decoration, art, craft have a common life and create synergy together. Architecture will not be disconnected from the design in it, object design will be less self obsessed and by being at the service of design and architecture decoration and craft will not be empty or accidental.
Following the same logic I would like to be able to enlarge this concept and apply it through the whole fabrication process to consider the environment, the craftsmanship, the people….
4. What inspires your work?
Many things are an inspiration to me: nature, light, colors, materials, craftsmanship, technology, as well as dreams, ideas… life.

5. How do you like the collaborative environment on jovoto, giving feedback and seeing the ideas develop?
I find this form of communication very exciting. The power this media has is overwhelming therefore the environment has to be kept respectful and gentle in order to remain positive. I find that in most cases it is so and that is great. It gives a real opportunity for sharing (now that is inspiring!)

6. Do You have a balcony? What do you use it for and what would be the balcony of your dreams?
I had a balcony in earlier years, now I have a small garden and it’s a real extension of my indoor space. The balcony of my dreams would be facing the sea but this might take some time as I live in Paris.
